My own lightsabers design

The dual lightsabers can be joined together at the interlocking hilt into a single weapon, becoming a double-bladed lightsaber. The weapon is more difficult to control than a regular double-bladed lightsaber, however, the curved hilts give the benefit of striking from unexpected angles. Each saber has a red synthetic crystal. (I reject the new canon for natural lightsaber Kyber crystals that change colour. My design is inspired by the lightsabers of Darth Malgus, Asajj Ventress and Jedi Grand Master Satele Shan.)

Grakstus Valytuva: Force-imbued Vibro-sword

The Grakstus Valytuva (English: Elegant Cleaner) is a Force-imbued Vibro-sword with a durasteel core enveloped in Beskar (Mandalorian iron) plus Cortosis-weave which makes the weapon able to withstand lightsaber and energy sword blows. The handle contains a compact ultrasonic vibration generator which can generate enough vibratory force to rip through durasteel plating. The weapon can be used as a swordbreaker to trap the sword or lightsaber of opponents.

Star Wars Rogue One: another worthless Hollywood cash-in

Yesterday, on 18 december 2016, I watched the latest Star Wars movie: Rogue One and… oh my God, what a crap! I don’t even know where to start. I really tried to like this movie so badly, but I just couldn’t. I’m quite a big Star Wars fan. Except the movies, I’m also following the so-called Star Wars Expanded Universe, which includes games (I’m playing the MMORPG SWTOR), novels (I liked the Darth Bane and Revan novels by Drew Karpyshyn as well as The Old Republic: Deceived by Paul S. Kemp), comics (I enjoyed the Star Wars – Knights of the Old Republic comics series by John Jackson Miller), series and more.

As I was going to watch The Force Awakens a year ago, I remember how the words “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…”, raised goose bumps and made my heartrate race. Although Rogue One still uses these words, it lacks the indispensable opening and rousing musical fanfare at the beginning that characterizes not only every Star Wars movie, but also the games, the series and even the audio-books. This is one of the reasons Rogue One didn’t transport me into the milieu created by George Lucas almost 40 years ago.

After The Force Awakens I was hoping the next movie would continue about the adventures of Rey, Finn, Poe and Luke Skywalker, however the events of Rogue One transpire before Episode IV: A New Hope. While Rogue One provides the answer to the unresolved question of how Princess Leia obtained the plans to the Death Star and presents a reasonable explanation for why the Empire’s ultimate weapon had such an easy-to-exploit flaw (something that has bothered Star Wars fans for years) it raises other, similar annoying questions like: Why did Galen Erso risk so much by sending a holo-message with his plan, but didn’t care to add the so crucial blue-print of his great design?

The cast of Rogue One was a disaster. Felicity Jones, the actress who played the main character Jyn Erso, was totally annoying. It seemed like she had the same expression on her face during the whole movie. The role of Jane Hawking in The Theory of Everything, suited her much better. But let’s not blame the cast, because the movie lacks of intriguing characters and doesn’t give us anyone to care about. The characters are one-dimensional and I didn’t feel any emotional connection with any of them. Sadly enough the only amusing one was the droid K-2SO. Previous droids such as R2-D2 and BB-8 were funny in a sweet way, however K2-SO is funny because he is an asshole. The rest of the gang is an assortment of clichés and in no character is that more obvious than in Jyn Erso. She is a hollow vessel and at no point does she make a choice. All this is at odds with how she is introduced as a tough survivor of the Imperial terror.

The story suffers from worthless dialogue. The script was boring. Especially in the beginning the movie jumps all over the place hastily, leaving no room for actual scenes. Personally I would have liked less dull action battles and better written characters. There were numerous mentions of the Force, but with no heart to them. There were only a few enjoyable moments. Rogue One is predictable from beginning to end. The finale is better, when Darth Vader shows up, but until that point you still don’t care about any of the characters or the plot. The planets and moons could have been developed with much more imagination!

Rogue One is entirely different than all the movies that have come before, but I don’t think this is a good thing. I went into this movie with an open mind. I only watched the trailer which kinda told me not to expect too much, yet I left feeling disappointed and angry realizing the fact that this was nothing but a cash-in film with no soul and no originality and that I was foolish enough to go and see it. At the end I was glad the 2,5 hours were finaly over and that I could go home and rest. This is not a worthy addition to the Star Wars universe and I wished they never made it!

Star Wars: the Expanded Universe (updated february, 2017)

There is so much more to Star Wars than those 8 movies! In fact I am far more intrigued by events during the Golden Age of the Old Republic, my favourite Star Wars era, that takes place from 25053 BBY (the founding of the Republic) until 1000 BBY (the Seventh Battle of Ruusan and the end of the New Sith Wars), than the Rise of the Galactic Empire (1000 BBY – 0 BBY) and what follows. I am especially interested in the timeline between 4000 BBY and 900 BBY, because the game SWTOR is set in this period as well as the following novels and comics I’ve read:

Star Wars – Knights of the Old Republic comics series (50 volumes) by John Jackson Miller (+- 3963 BBY)
The Old Republic: Revan by Drew Karpyshyn (3954 BBY – 3900 BBY)
The Old Republic: Deceived by Paul S. Kemp (3653 BBY)
Star Wars: The Old Republic – The lost Suns comics series (5 volumes) by Alexander Freed (+- 3651 BBY)
Star Wars: The Old Republic: Annihilation by Drew Karpyshyn (3650 BBY)
Darth Bane: Path of Destruction by Drew Karpyshyn (1003 BBY – 1,000 BBY)
Darth Bane: Rule of Two by Drew Karpyshyn (1000 BBY – 990 BBY)
Darth Bane: Dynasty of Evil by Drew Karpyshyn (980 BBY+)

BBY = Before Battle of Yavin
ABY = After Battle of Yavin

Because I was particularly interested in Darth Malgus, I’ve also read the Book of Sith – Secrets from the Dark Side, a collection of the writings of Sorzus Syn, Darth Malgus, Darth Bane, Mother Talzin, Darth Plagueis and Darth Sidious, bound together by Sidious.

star wars the book of sith

The book looks great, as if it is bound from various ancient texts. Each collection of pages has a distinct font and page edge. I must say I struggled through some parts, such as the part about the Night Sisters, which I don’t think deserved so many pages. Darth Revan and Darth Malak are only mentioned. I was hoping to read more about them. Most interesting to me are the parts about Darth Malgus and Darth Bane. Maybe because they were not new to me and I was familiar with their background before the read. Those who are following the Expanded Universe will comprehend and enjoy The book of Sith more than those without context.

SWTOR Sith Inquisitor Complete Story – Dark Side/Witty

After reading the Darth Bane trilogy, I finaly began to understand the Sith philosophy and decided to start a Sith character on SWTOR. Two years ago I started as a perfect Jedi and based my choices on my own moral principles. I could not imagine myself playing a villain or monster at all, because it would make me feel so guilty. But the experience showed otherwise and playing a selfish, cynical jerk can be really fun. First I tried the Imperial Agent and now I’m going a step further.

Enjoy my upload of the full story of my mostly Dark Side Sith Inquisitor Darth Veraduna! (Companion Conversations and expansions are included) Most people don’t know that Veradun was Darth Malgus’ birth name and since he is my favorite Sith within SWTOR, I am wearing his name with proud. <3 I reccomend watching the videolist in HD 1089p.

Star Wars – Darth Bane Trilogy review

Even though the Sith are – obviously – capable of horrific deeds and the Dark Side brings destruction, the Darth Bane trilogy made me finally understand the reasoning behind the ways of the Sith and the the Rule of Two that used to confuse me. Karpyshyn explained the Dark Side in depth and managed to illustrate the inner turmoil and struggle of the followers of it.

Darth Bane realized that the strength of numbers was a trap that had snared all the great Sith Lords who had come before. The history has proven that in greater numbers the Sith will always turn their hatred against each another. Lesser followers would unite their inferior skills to bring down a strong leader, the infighting of rivals weakening the Order. It is inevitable: it is the way of the dark side. Naga Sadow, Exar Kun, Darth Revan: each had been powerful and had unleashed an army of followers against the Jedi, yet in each case the Jedi prevailed and would always remain united, while the Sith would be weakened by infighting.

Kaan had tried to solve the problem by making all Sith equal, but his solution showed no understanding of the true nature of the dark side marked by rivarly and infighting. More than a hundred Dark Lords followed Kaan, but most were weak and inferior. The Sith numbers were greater than ever, yet they were still losing the war against the Jedi… because the power of the dark side cannot be dispersed among the masses. It must be concentrated in the few who are worthy of the honor.

If one Master would train more than one apprentice, the inferior students would unite, bring down the powerful Master and eventually fight among themselves, further weakening the Order. The only way the Sith can survive is by following the Rule of Two: one Master and one apprentice. One to embody the power of the dark side, the other to crave it. The Master will train his apprentice in the ways of the Sith until one day the apprentice must challenge him. If the apprentice proves unworthy, the Master will destroy him/her and choose a new apprentice. If (s)he proves the stronger, the Master will fall and the apprentice will become the new Dark Lord of the Sith and choose an apprentice of him/her own. The Rule of Two guarantees that each Master will be more powerful than the one who came before. It culls the weak. Only the strong survive, because only the strong deserve to.

Power isn’t measured in numbers and power alone is not enough. Patience. Cunning. Secrecy. Alliances. Infiltration. These are the tools the Sith should use to bring down the Jedi. Following the Rule of Two, generation after generation, the power and influence of the Sith would grow until one day they would destroy the Jedi and rule the galaxy.

After Des joins the Sith, becoming Darth Bane, he doesn’t allow himself to care about people from his past. He learns to survive alone and to rely on nobody but himself. Attachment to family and friends is a weakness, a chain to bind and drag you down.

Even the Code of the Sith makes more sense after this read. I always thought the Sith were sadists and slaves of their anger, but they manage to use it to their advantage, show cunning, patience and control their passions. Darth Bane had different motives to kill: increasing his personal power, surviving, revenge, reducing risk, etc. but he never killed out of pleasure and taught his apprentice not to kill ”without purpose”. Evil is a word used by the ignorant and the weak. The Dark Side is about survival, about unleashing your inner power. It glorifies the strength of the individual.

The character I admire most is the strong willed healer Caleb. Set Harth, the Human Dark Jedi and Githany are my favourite villains. It was interesting to read a story from the perspective of villains: Bane and Zannah are the perfect Sith duo like never seen before in the Star Wars universe. Still I have no sympathy for Bane, Zannah nor the Iktotchi Darth Cognus, aka The Huntress, even though their skills are impressive and I consider Bane as the true Sith’ari. I am very pleased with how in the third volume the stories of the characters are intertwined and the perfect ending of the trilogy.

There is also a decent trailer of it now, much better than the announcement I shared in my previous post.

Many reasons to be excited

I obviously spent a lot of hours playing Star Wars: the Old Republic (SWTOR). I play(ed) the following classes: The Jedi Consular (a light side sage healer as well as a dark side shadow tank), the Republic Trooper (a light side yet arrogant/bullying vanguard tank) and my favourite: the Imperial Agent (dark side healer operative). What I like about this game is the storytelling rather than the gameplay. There are interesting characters. An example is the Sith Lord Darth Malgus – one of my favourite villains.

Warning: the following paragraph might contain spoilers of SWTOR missions including Malgus.

Unfortunately you don’t meet him before the Epilogue of chapter 3 of the class storyline on the planet Ilum, and you can’t join him. Instead you are forced to kill him. :( I’ll upload a review and summary of this to my YouTube channel soon. For now though, I add the whole mission without comentary. Rumor has it Malgus will be back and even though I hated it to kill him, I am not sure what to think about it. Death looses it’s meaning when they decide to awaken the dead…

The cinematics of SWTOR with Malgus are stunning. The first one shows events of The fall of Korriban, the second one (05:47) is about The battle of Alderaan and the third one about the attack on the Jedi Temple during the Sacking of Coruscant (10:45 – 13:50)

I wanted to know more about Malgus’ background, philosophy and relationship with Eleena Daru, so I started reading the Wookiepedia and eventually the Book of Sith – Secrets from the Dark Side, which includes his writings and the novel Star Wars: The Old Republic: Deceived written by Paul S. Kemp. And I am not disappointed! It was an enjoyable novel. It is the second novel of a serie and set around the Sacking of Coruscant.

star wars the book of sithstar wars the old republic deceived

I intend to read the novel about Revan, because I believe I’ll find his story interesting too, but many who played Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic (aka KOTOR), complain about this novel. Apparently the story in the game is better. Star Wars KOTOR is considered the best Star Wars game ever, so I decided to read the novel first and then buy KOTOR for PC and see for myself. And maybe even KOTOR 2.

star wars kotorstar wars kotor 2

I am also planning to subscribe on SWTOR, but I am waiting for the announced expansion (Knights of the Eternal Throne) coming in the fall of 2016. By subscribing I’ll get all previous expansions as well… at least, I hope this will be possible. Here’s the (very) short announcement of the expansion.

Other gaming plans: I want to buy the Back to the Future game for PS4. First I looked for the one for PS3, but since my brother bought a PS4 console a few days ago, I changed my mind. I planned to buy the games Little Big Planet and Lego Star Wars: the Force Awakens (PS4), but I scratched them of the list, for now. My time and money for gaming is limited and priorities must be made.

I also read that that this fall Star Trek Online will be launching on PS4. Even though the trailer doesn’t look interesting (kinda cliché and nothing is said about other playable factions such as The Klingon Empire, the Romulan Republic and TOS Federation: only Starfleet is mentioned, huh?). I’d love to try it out on PS4, because I started to miss Star Trek Online. Especially the spacecombat, which is a million times better than in SWTOR.

Greatest movie villains/antiheroes

Here is a list of my favourite villains in movies. Now don’t look at me like I’m crazy and just admit that we all sometimes have a weaknes for bad guys, especially women like them because of the thrill, the feeling of danger, or because we pity them and have the urge to “fix” them by their love. The reasons for falling in love with those listed below despite their awful traits/crimes vary per character: good acting, sense of humor, charm, special abilities/powers (like intelligence) or an interesting philosophical point of view. Quite a few of them would fit perfectly in an institution for mentally ill, but craziness has always fascinated me, because those insane souls are often unique, in some cases brilliant and at least amusing. They think outside the box! (spoiler alert!)

Col. Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds (2009), played by Christoph Waltz

Hans Landa

In my eyes Landa is the best and unbeatable villain ever. Both charming and twisted that you must love him and smile while he scares the crap out of you. You know – obviously – that he’s a monster and still all you want to do is to hug him. Charisma level: over 9000. xD Magnificent performance! The first time I saw Waltz acting, was in the Inglourious Basterds. I was imediatelly convinced he is born to shine on the screen. In acting at least as good as Landa in hunting Jews. :D (sorry if that was offensive) My compliments go to the writer/designer/choreograph – in fact everyone who made the character. I guess it is mainly the work of Tarantino.

Oh my god, I laughed so hard about this scene beneath. :’D How he pointed to his lap. xD And her reaction. Especially her last words when she asked ‘Was jetzt?’ (What now), with a fake, anxious, smile. Landa is in this scene an elegant gentleman, smiling, polite, and then suddenly he jumps and strangles her with his bare hands. Such an unpredictable freak! I always hate it when in movies during encounters between a heros and a villains, the bad guy has finaly the oportunity to kill the good guy, but instead of doing so he starts talking about how he’ll kill him blablabla… And meanwhile the good guy gets free or attacks first… There’s no need to announce it/show off! This is such a great scene, reminding me of the fairytale Cinderella. Only this time it’s not exactly a prince who comes looking for her.

I loved the ‘wait-for-the-cream-scene’

The opening was great too. Unfortunately this video is not showing the full scene.

Erik Lensherr/Magneto in X-men: first class’, played by Michael Fassbender

An amazing scene is when Magneto halts a missile barrage and directs it upon a fleet.

Professor Charles Xavier: “Erik, you said yourself we’re the better men. This is the time to prove it. There are thousands of men on those ships. Good, honest, innocent men! They’re just following orders.”
Erik Lehnsherr: “I’ve been at the mercy of men just following orders. Never again.”

Here’s another great line of him.

Professor Charles Xavier: “Listen to me very carefully, my friend: killing Shaw will not bring you peace.”
Erik Lensherr: “Peace was never an option.”

I think Magneto has a point about the nature of the human race and I can understand why a mutant would join him. However, if I was a mutant, I’d probably stay neutral or rather stick with Charles, because killing all no-mutants is not that different from what is done to Erik when he was a child. (the Jews were the victim) Excellent performance of Fassbender.

Lestat de Lioncourt in Interview with the Vampire (1994) played by Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise as Lestat

Lestat: “I’m Gentleman Death in silk and lace, come to put out the candles. The canker in the rose.”

This is what I call a real vampire and not that pretty boy Edward Cullen played by expressionless actor Robert Pattinson. Lestat was in Anne Rices novel not that intriguing. In the movie, however, gorgeous! Pure evil. Tom Cruise should play more insane villains – this was a fascinating performance! The best vicious, irresistible vampire in a movie.

Lestat: “Evil is a point of view. God kills indiscriminately and so shall we. For no creatures under God are as we are, none so like him as ourselves.”

Lestat: [to Louis] “Feed on what you will. Rats, chickens, poodles, I’ll leave you to it and watch you come around. But just remember, life without me would be even more unbearable.” [laughs]

Lestat: “It’s your coffin, my love. Enjoy it. Most of us never get to know what it feels like.”
Louis: “Why do you do this?”
Lestat: “I like to do it. I enjoy it. Take your aesthete’s taste to purer things, kill them swiftly, if you will, but do it. For do not doubt: you are a killer, Louis.”

This is the most hilarious scene. Lestat dancing with that corpse of Claudia’s mother.
Lestat: “There’s still life in the old lady yet!” :’D

The Joker in The Dark Knight (2008), played by Heath Ledger

“Some men aren’t looking for anything logical, like money. They can’t be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.”

Although he is completely insane, with his strangeness and sense of humor he definitely put a smile on my face! And that without using a knife – tadAAAAA! :D The Joker is an interesting character with an interesting point of view. Well played by Ledger. I was never a fan of batman or batman-movies, neither I am now and honestly, the Joker was the only reason I watched this movie. Although Oldman and Bale are great actors, in this movie they bored me to death, like almost every scene without this crazy m*****f*****. :D Heath Ledger was awarded a posthumous Oscar for his performance as The Joker.

Memorable scenes with the Joker:

– The Joker is in prison and teasing a guard (because the guard is not letting him make a phonecall) by telling him details about how he killed his friends. Sounds stupid? Well, he is getting the guard exactly where he wants him. Just watch the next scenes. :D

– The joker is playing with Batman a game that my brother and me sometimes call ‘Schisshase’ (a funny German word for coward). The game goes like this: two persons are moving towards each other until they crash or someone goes out of the way and gains the title of ‘Schisshase’. The Joker, in poor condition after a crash, is standing on the way while batman is driving a huge and fast bike with a very powerful weapon and wants to hit him. The Joker must be completely insane to play this game while no chance of surviving. But, it is the Joker, in the end, who wins the game, after daring batman to hit him. It makes clear who of them is more confident one and has less fear. The Joker simply does not care what will happen next and weather he will die or stay alive – even if he’s hanging on a building – he wants the thrill, the fun.

– Another crazy scene: the Joker slides down a whole mountain of money like a child and sets everything on fire a few moments later after he explained he is not interested in money, but wants to send a message.

Darth Vader in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977), David Prowse

darth vader

Besides his dark, epic appearance and theme, he has some really great lines. Most of them are interesting because of their dose of sarcasm or irony. Examples include:

“The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am.”
“Perhaps I can find new ways to motivate them.”

“I find your lack of faith disturbing.”

“We would be honored if you would join us.”

A Sith yet so calm. Even after Han greets him with bullets, Vader gives him an absurd warm-hearted welcome. This courteousness and sarcasm I like about Darth Vader. He shows good manners while intimidating and is very cunning.

Dracula in Dracula (1992) played by Gary Oldman

Dracula: “I shall rise from my own death, to avenge hers with all the powers of darkness.”

It’s been a long time since I saw this movie, but I remember the role of Oldman as Count Dracula. He even played the old-aged Dracula, who looks pretty much scary and sick. A creepy old guy, a savage beast, a charming gentleman… it’s crazy how many different forms Dracula has in this film. Oldman mastered them all!

Dracula: “I have crossed oceans of time to find you.”

Dracula: “You will, I trust, excuse me if I do not join you. But, I have already dined, and I never drink… wine.”

Erik Lehnsherr in X-Men (2000), Ian McKellen

Aka Magneto. :)

This is my favourite scene. Magnetos girlfriend Mystique seduced a guard and poured iron into his drink. Magneto draws a cloud of iron particles out through Laurio’s blood and squeezes them into a set of balls. Laurio collapses to the floor.

Magneto: “Mr. Laurio, never trust a beautiful woman. Especially one who’s interested in YOU. ;)”

His escape is so cool. :D

Agent Smith in The Matrix (1999), Hugo Weaving

The greatest acting in the Matrix-movies is done by Weaving. I think that no other role will suit him like Agent Smith.

Best scene: 1:49 – 3:07

Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Anthony Hopkins

Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter

And now I just remain silent… This is one of the most scary movie-character of all. Seriously, I tend to avoid eyecontact with him. :P This is because he has it all — brains, brawn and insanity. Anthony Hopkins earned an Oscar for his performance.

Best line: “I do wish we could chat longer but i’m having an old friend for dinner.”

T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Robert Patrick

Run for your life! Another annoying crazy bastard who comes after you and you can not get rid off because he wont die. I must admit he looks very cool on the screen, but I have no need meeting him in RL. ^^

Hauptmann Gerd Wiesler in Das Leben der Anderen (2006), Ulrich Mühe

Hauptmann Gerd Wiesler

Another great performance, another good actor who died too young.

In 1984 East Berlin Hauptmann Gerd Wiesler, an agent of the Stasi conducting surveillance on a writer finds himself becoming absorbed by his life. Later at the Stasi Records Agency the writer discovers the files the Stasi kept while he was under surveillance. He is confused by the false information about his activities, but when he reaches the final report, he sees a red fingerprint and realizes that Stasi agent HGW XX/7 had concealed his illegal activities and removed the typewriter from its hidden location. Years later, Wiesler passes a bookstore window display promoting the Sonate vom Guten Menschen. He goes inside and opens a copy of the book, discovering it is dedicated ‘To HGW XX/7, with gratitude’. Deeply moved, he buys the book. When the sales clerk asks if he wants it gift-wrapped, he responds: “No. It’s for me.” :)

Jean-Baptiste Grenouille in Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006), by Ben Whishaw

grenouille perfume

His deeds cross the lines of humanity, yet he is also brilliant or even kind of divine because of his ‘supernatural’ ability that makes him almost all-powerful. You can’t really blame him for what he is considering his past. I’m not justyfying his crimes, but I’m not sure he can be accused for premeditated murder, for he’s not really intentionally causing the death of the girls. He is obsessed by their smell and has no concept of right and wrong. His first kill is an accident and that makes it hard to judge him. Intriguing story and murder, especially in the book. I was skeptical when I heard there was a movie of the novel about Grenouille, but I was not disappointed at all. The novel is much better though.

Clyde Alexander Shelton in Law Abiding Citizen (2009), played by Gerard Butler

clyde shelton law abiding citizen

I’m going to bring the whole f**king diseased corrupt temple down on your head. It’s going to be biblical.

Nick Rice: “You end this!”
Clyde Shelton: [smiles] “I’m just gettin’ warmed up.”

Nick Rice: “You think your wife and daughter would feel good about you killing in their name?”
Clyde Shelton: “My wife and daughter can’t feel anything. They’re dead.”

Amon Leopold Göth in Schindler’s List (1993), played by Ralph Fiennes

Ralph Fiennes did a great job as an actor. He received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of this murderer and war criminal.

This scene is why very important. Goeth is battling with his own humanity the entire time. She says nothing. He debates her value, even her humanity. If he recognizes her as human, as a woman, he must also recognize the horror and abomination of what his job is and what his role is in this ethnic cleansing. So he denies her humanity and trades his decency and humanity for the safety of going along with orders and not questioning, thus allowing, the unspeakable.

Iedere huid is anders.

Vermijd plotselinge temperatuurverschillen of heel warm/koud. Ook tijdens het douchen.

Vermijd stress.

Louis Widmer Zonnebrand f50 ongeparfumeerd 50ml
louis widmer sun protection

It’s magic.

Drink voldoende.

How to water your plants while you’re not home

Going on a business trip or holiday, but worried if your plants will survive that long without water? You don’t have the time or money to buy a system that will provide water? Here is a solution that will probably resolve your problem. All you need is water, a (pet) bottle and the laws of physics, which are all as good as free. ^^

How to do:
Simply fill a bottle with water, flip it upsidedown and stick the bottom (thus the bottleneck) into the ground. The water will not flow away, only drop slowly. Depending on the sort bottle, ground and plant, this will work for weeks.

SWTOR: Imperial Agent Diary

Personal notes of Operative Alverna, Code named Cipher Nine

* First of all I want to make clear that SWTOR is a RPG (role playing game) and that the moral decisions within the uploaded records are not (always) my own. They are made to fit a certain character. This one is a pretty much wicked one. A female Imperial Agent who can act like a mean assasin. Sometimes it is amusing to play from the view of a villain, sometimes I found it hard to be that mean. I also kept a kind of diary for my character, because I loved the story and wanted to give it a personal twist.

** Secondly, a warning: the text and videos below contain huge spoilers of the Imperial Agent’s class story.

Subject: Undercover as the Red Blade (on the ugly planet Hutta)

Pretending to be someone else is such fun! Unexpected, crazy things happen and it requires adapting. Therefore I love undercover missions where I can use, test and improve my skills.

What I did with Dheno Rey however, flirting him down yet killing him, was not to test my seductiveness – I’m pretty confident when it comes to manipulating man. I did it to feed my ego. A girl can never have enough of compliments and unfortunately they are rare if she is an agent. Poor guy, he really thought he would get laid. If he was my type, I could have made him my toy, but too bad that was not the case.

This girl working for Nem’ro, Kaliyo, noticed the whole thing and I’m not surprised: she’s constantly watching me and might even get in the way. She is wicked and kinky, seeking to intimidate me, but also intriguing and charming at moments. I have to admit that handling her could be a real challenge. Dangerous. I like. <3 Later: Like I predicted, Kaliyo got in my way. I was just about to 'get rid of' her, when suddenly Keeper interfered and now we're partners. :S Good news is that she'll work under my command. Can't wait to see how that will go. ............................................................................................................................................................. Subject: Motives and goals?

My career at Imperial Intelligence has just begun, but who or what am I working for? Am I serving the empire? The Sith? Or just blindly following Keeper’s orders for the money?

I observed those around me and they don’t seem to act out of devotion. What philosophical principle or interest is driving them? Kaliyo is obviously an anarchist. She’s into fun, adventure, money and games. Keeper is more a pragmatist and dislikes Sith interventions in Intelligence, however he shows enough respect out of fear. What about me? I never really thought about it, but one thing I know for sure is that I am certainly no hypocrite like Keeper. I will not obey anyone out of fear. If I dislike something, I’ll fight against it, rebel, defect or die. Surely I do like money and luxury, but apart from that? Time to find out…

Subject: A ‘friend’ among the Dark Council

I guess my question about loyalty and motivation is answered: Darth Jadus. It is a privilege, an honor, that such a powerful Sithlord noticed my talents and chose me for his special task, even if I don’t fully understand what this task will be. But I trust him as he ensured I’ll find out later.

Keeper is okay to work with, but I don’t like it when he treats me like an amateur, constantly keeping me down. I want to be more important than this, to climb the career ladder. I want to know who/what I am working for and a stronger Empire too.

So, I admit I was secretly amused by how Darth Jadus put Keeper in his place and choose me for his special task. He is strong willed and calm. I was surprised by his patience with Keeper. He remained courteous, merciful and became not passionate or angry like I expected from a Sith.

Anyhow, I’d like to work for Lord Jadus rather than Keeper. I’d be his special agent. <3 .................................................................................................................. Subject: Darth Jadus’ death

A cold shiver ran down my spine as I heard the news. I don’t understand… How can this be? How can he be… dead? Killed? Just like that? He is supposed to be eternal! I was so proud, he promised me things… Now I feel like a fool. I can’t believe this. How could he let it happen? Whoever is behind this, I will make him pay! I guess I’ll better concentrate on that from now… I swear I’ll seek revenge!

Subject: One step closer to Victory!

Thanks to me the Eagle’s entire terrorist network is dissembled and the Eagle, the man claiming he killed Darth Jadus, is finally dead. However, before dying he revealed that he had a mysterious patron inside the Empire. And that’s why I am still not satisfied. I want the truth. I want my revenge. I cannot accept Darth Jadus’ death and leave this chapter behind me yet. I miss him…

But like always, I am keeping my true feelings and intentions private. Even when Jadus’ daughter Darth Zhorrid begged me to swear I would find and kill the murder of her father, I acted like disabling the Eradicators was priority. I hate Zhorrid and enjoy to mock her, to play with her and watch her burn, thus I refused to swear I’d revenge Jadus even though I was actually planning to do so. She hurt me yes, but it was so worth it to see her desperate face. :D

I should probably clear my mind and focus on my mission now. Then up to the Artus system!

Subject: My Lord is alive!

I should be surprised, but somehow I am not. Deep inside I always knew that he could not be dead. His ‘last words’ were true: he is eternal. How could I doubt it.

From the very beginning I was intrigued by Darth Jadus. It’s contradicting: obeying authority was never my style. I was not born to be a solder following every order. Deception, bullying, sarcasm and intelligence portrayed me, or at least, the mask I was wearing. I was cunning and into thrills, not truly political and never trusting blindly. However, Darth Jadus was a different story. I even kneeled before him. My heart filled with pride. I was privileged he noticed my talents. It was a compliment, an honor. I enjoyed his attention and saw a chance to make career, dreamt of being Jadus’ special Agent. Though Keeper was okay to work with, I hated it when he treated me like an amateur, constantly keeping me down. I had a hard time suppressing my grin as I saw how Darth Jadus put Keeper in his place and choose me for a special task. My loyalty and respect lied with Jadus. Always.

But then he died. I was shocked, devastated and angry. How could a powerful Sith Lord get killed just like that? That’s just impossible. He was supposed to be eternal. I had a hard time accepting his death. Though I am not a force sensitive – I always felt he was somewhere outside, not dead. But I had to put these feelings aside and get back to work. Swearing to go after the Eagle and revenge my Lord.

Nobody knew. Even after killing the Eagle, when Jadus’ daughter Darth Zhorrid begged me to swear I would kill the murder of her father, I acted like the disabling Eradicators was priority. I hated Zhorrid and wanted to piss her off, thus refused to swear I’ll revenge Jadus even though I was actually planning to.

I never felt sympathy nor fear for the Dark Council or The Emperor. Who was he anyway, this ghost of an emperor? Except Darth Zhorrid and Darth Malgus, I knew no Sith or Dark Council member. And Zhorrid was an idiot. After Zhorrid tortured Keeper, I definitely wanted her dead.

After killing the Eagle who mentioned a mysterious Patron and the conversation with Zhorrid about her father, I had again, after a long time, an irrational feeling Darth Jadus was… alive. And suddenly I stood in front of him and it was like in old times. Although he lied, I was happy to see him. And overwhelmed. This was my chance to make my biggest dream come true yet my feelings mixed. I was afraid he would not keep his promise and use me like last time. My trust was damaged by his fake death. But the temptation was too strong and I was willing to risk my life. If he was telling the truth, everything would have a purpose. I trusted he was wise enough not to kill me.
He was against the anti-alien policies of the Empire and allowed aliens into Imperial Intelligence. Another reason to join him.

It was not an easy choice, even though I said it wasn’t hard. A lot of civilians had to die and others such as my companions such as Vector and Kaliyo would see me as a traitor instead of a hero, but they would get used to it eventually. I am strong enough not to lie awake because other people have a negative view of me. I don’t care what they think of me, I don’t need to be everyone’s friend. Company is fine, buy leadership comes first. I am ready to follow and do what needs to be done. For a stronger empire. For Lord Jadus.

Interview with the Vampire

Last night I watched the movie Interview with the Vampire. I knew of it for many years, but I did not want to watch it before reading the same titled novel by Anne Rice. The book was beautiful. The movie too, but it missed some parts I find important.

I waited so long to see this, so I decided to take time for it and watched it alone at dark, with my headphone including its good sound quality, so there would be nothing to distract me. The movie was intense and frightened me about four-five times, which makes it a good horror movie… but one with humor too!

I found Lestat in the novel not really appealing or interesting, but in the movie he is evil yet absolutely gorgeous! OMG when he danced with that corpse! The best vampire I ever saw in a movie. Tom Cruise should play more insane villains. Both villains I know he ever played are on my list of favourites. Lestat was amazing, Brad Pitt as Louis played well too… but Armand was in the book so intriguing, in the movie however not that special.

The soundtrack is lovely and haunting. It gives me goose bumps. Very intense and dramatic music!

Pi (1998)

Recently I watched the movie Pi and I found it quite impressive. Though a few scenes are seriously disturbing (I even had to look away a few times), there is no doubt only a great mind could have made such a work and I really enjoyed watching it.

It is obviously not a regular movie and therefore it cannot really be compared with any other movie or judged by the usual criteria. If you look that way, you will only find it confusing. I believe Pi is too individual and abstract for such an approach. One of the things that makes it special is the sound and editing. This gritty black&white cinematography creates a dark, creepy atmosphere that fits the madness and alienation. Even the light scenes are scary.

I think the movie raises great questions I often think about. The main theme I recognize in this movie is the deep drive to understand life (by reasoning and math) and the pain caused by the incapability to achieve that goal. It’s about the question whether it is worth exploring complexity, streching your mind and going to the edge of its limits, or even further and risking to lose it, to go mad and never come back. And also about the question whether a genious like Max is gifted or cursed… maybe both?

The soundtrack is truly amazing. Especially these tracks below:
Orbital – P.E.T.R.O.L.
Clint Mansel – Pi r^2
Massive Attack – Angel

Angel of Massive Attack is divine! But wait a minute… Clint Mansel? That name sounds familair… but of course! I just discovered interesting links. Lux Aeterna – one of the most haunting, depressing pieces of music – is a composition of Clint Mansel! One of my favorite soundtracks, though I never watched the movie Requiem for a Dream. My brother told me explicitly not to. No idea why, but I trust my brother. However since I just discovered who is the director of it… (Darren Aronofsky, the director of Pi :D) and Sean Gullette acts in it (he’s playing the main character in Pi), I am getting very curious. I saw a lot of very positive comments about it. Weird.

Anyhow, there’s another link: I did not know Clint Mansel made the wonderfull soundtrack for the movie Moon. And also the theme for The Imitation game, which I coincidentally watched one day before Pi. Amazing movie with such a moving story… though I don’t remember the soundtrack. I’ll check it out later. For now I am going to update my list of favorite soundtracks! What a coincidence to discover it like this… or is this no coincidence and there is a pattern? ;) :P

Another plus: thank to Pi I have a new hobby: Go! I’m studying it now and I really enjoy solving problems and playing it. I will probably post about it in the future in the gaming section. :)

My first chess game :p

For a few days I am playing Rummykub on Facebook, but unfortunately only one or a few rounds per day for I don’t have enough credits. (and no friends to invite in order to earn some :P ) So I thought, let’s see if there are more nice games on Facebook. Chess was in the list, so I thought why not try playing against the computer? I found one via google.

I learned the chess rules since I was about 4-5 years old, never playing though. Wait, that’s not completely true, I remember participating in a competition at school. I performed poorly, but at the end I was not the last one.^^ But that’s really a long time ago, 8 years at least and I signed up without any training and was not seriously doing it. I did it only because otherwise I had to go to some boring lesson instead. So that’s why I call the game of today my first game.

I played against a computer. A very easy to beat one I guess, since I won. (with white in 31 moves) Here is the game. :D Will analyze it someday. Most stupid thing is that at the last move I thought was going to check, but suddenly a text on my screen appeared saying it was check-mate… so I won. After a few seconds I realized why. xD I am such a newbie, but still happy I won. Maybe it was not even that bad after all, at least it was fun to stretch some brain-muscles. Will try with black next time. :p

Fraps vs Camstudio: pc infection and big disappointment

Two of the most recomended screenrecorders installed, but still not able to record a damn shit!!

I was making a Photoshop CS3 tutorial and a SWTOR farming guide using screenshots, Photoshop and Windows Live Moviemaker, but suddenly I could not make screenshots in SWTOR at all. At the point it was almost done I was not able to finish my project which took me a lot of time…
So I downloaded Fraps for free. Problem solved. Fraps is a recommended program, really easy to use and I was even able to make beautiful screenshots of conversations which never worked before.

But I also wanted to add gameplay to explain things better. Showing it instead of writing it. The great thing is that Fraps records everything and it is fluent. (no lag) I used it to record some SWTOR conversations and gameplay. Unfortunately I discovered this was only the free version which is very limited. It can not record longer than 30 seconds and there is a small watermark on the top of the video. I tried to repeat two records using a macro on my mouse and keyboard, but it did not let me start a new record immediately after the previous ended. Even after a lot of cutting the result is crappy. I uploaded the videos to my Youtube channel.

I was not satisfied. Camstudio is a highly recommended screen recorder and I was excited after I read it was free. Unfortunately it came with a unwanted program called PC Speed Maximizer including a virus. My antivirus software detected a trojan and removed it. But today my computer is slower and when I open my internet browser there are these annoying adds and popups. This is how I view my page.

Another problem is that it wont even record my fullsreen gameplay. All I see is a black screen with the audio. Thats just great! I am upset and pissed off because of all this crap. Scanning my computer again, but not detecting anything.

13 february 2015 Update: my antivirus program could not detect the problem, not even the deepest scan. But I discovered an new extension installed on Google Chrome called “Strong signal”. I already tried to remove it from my browser yesterday, but it was back. Until I removed it from my software list. Now the ads and popup windows no longer appear when I surf on the internet. YAY!

So there is one problem left: the black screen when recording gameplay in fullscreen with Camstudio.

SWTOR challenge for 2015

At 00:00, I was on SWTOR for a few minutes and suprisignly enough there were others who live in the same timezone as I do online at this moment. More losers like me lol. We came together at the republic fleet, dancing and throwing snowballs and fireworks. May the force be with us in the next year! :D

After a few hours of sleep I decided to log into my Jedi Shadow character again, after a very long time not playing, Not with the intention to play it, but because of additional crewskills. And maybe because I missed cutting with that gorgeous double bladed lightsaber. Soon I realized why I died on Taris all the time [the reason I gave up playing this character and made a healer]. I played on a too high lvl and my character was really poorly equiped. Now I laugh about it, because I was such a newbie… After a few changes I asked myself: could I play a tank? And how can a tank with a light armor ever survive? Here is what I have learned.

The Jedi Shadow is a melee DPS/Tank with short range abilities. This makes it a strong competitor when it comes to short range combat, however, Jedi Shadow has no self or targeted healing outside of a few situational abilities and talents. This means that survivability comes down to either companion healing, group healing, or slaying the enemy before they slay you. Luckily, even though Shadows are light armor wearers, they get a strong boost in their defense thanks to shield generators.

Jedi Shadows choose their playstyle by activating different lightsaber techniques which reflect either damage or tanking. These techniques drastically affect gameplay and synergize with their abilities in order to enable a Jedi Shadow to hold the attention of the enemy or pummel it into the ground. There are three techniques: Combat Technique (Tanking), Force Technique (DPS), and Shadow Technique (DPS).

Combat Technique gives the Jedi Shadow’s attacks the ability to drain life from the enemy, boosts threat generation, increases armor (150%) and shield chance (20%), and reduces bonus damage. Jedi Shadows equip shields along with light armor, making them fairly weak in the defense department, but with Combat Technique, the armor becomes much greater and the shield chance increases greatly, making them a real tank. So don’t let the armor fool you, robes can take a beating when you have the force on your side.

The different techniques come with an extra special boost. They can be “breached” for additional effects. Force Technique adds a DoT (damage over time) debuff, Combat Technique hits five nearby enemies for a small amount of damage and reduces their accuracy, and Combat Technique deals direct damage. Force Breach is one of the most powerful abilities in the Shadow’s damage rotation, so make sure to use it liberally.

The other unique trait of the Shadow is their ability to stealth. Stealth is a great tool for positional attacks, allowing a Shadow to move into the perfect spot before combat without being seen, and can also be used to avoid combat when attempting to explore the various planets. It has an even bigger role in PvP, allowing a Shadow to sneak in for a kill or to take an objective unnoticed. Stealth is broken on combat and while activating many of the various quest objectives.

So I got back to Coruscant and participated in a few heroics (higher difficulty missions that offer greater rewards). Most groups on such a low lvl planet as Coruscant consisted of noobs who didn’t know anything about tactics like CC (crowd control = use of an ability that renders an enemy incapacitated for a period of time and only as long as the enemy takes no damage) and were not able to listen/communicate (every time they attacked the enemy I ccd with force lift), but one group was really fantastic and I enjoyed it. It was nice, but as a tanking shadow I can better equip a good shield instead of a focus and study the abilities better in order to learn to hold threat. I did collect the datacrons and the jumping went a LOT better. As a healer people will love you and want you in their group. I remember a group begging me to join them and after I helped thanking, bowing in front of me, calling me their hero. A nice feeling. But I must say that tanking is even more exciting and fulifilling than healing as you look your enemies in the eyes and probably lead the group. You are the star in the middle of it. This will be a new challenge for me. :)

2 January 2015 – update

I believe I can tank. :D Or at least, I now know I can learn how to do it and what skills are required. Practiced on Coruscant with a lvl 17 shadow, and it worked fine! I was able to hold threat and the enemies attacked me, me and me, so the DPS could deal damage without losing health. The healer made a mess of it though, instead of healing me she/he attacked even the cc-d enemies with earthquake… Earthquake is an ability to fight a large number of weaker enemies at once, not two difficoult ones you can better kill one after one. But I clearly succeeded to hold the attention of the enemies, because they turned to me, my health decreased while much weaker players took no damage at all and I was able to guard them. Too bad they did not realize what happened and what an important role I actually played. But once again, even though there is a lot weight on your shoulders, tanking is fun and very fulfilling. Now I am no longer afraid. Time to try it on Taris.^^

Btw. I found a nice Balkan guild with experienced players, they are active members running ops and doing fps. :)

Corsair k65 RGB

Finaly… a compact, programable keyboard, without numpad so I have space for my mouse. It’s almost perfect, except that I wanted one with flat keys, not mechanical. But these Cherry MS red switches are actually not bad, I like the feeling when I type and they don’t make noise. I even love the sound. I am trying it for a few days now and I can not wait to try the software.

The logitech g600 MMO gaming mouse works fine and I spare me a lot of energy because of the macros. The software is great. I use macros for many purposses except for gaming, because I can not reeach the G-buttons quick enough. This keyboard will allow me to use macros in the game. But is really was too expensive.
