Pi (1998)

Recently I watched the movie Pi and I found it quite impressive. Though a few scenes are seriously disturbing (I even had to look away a few times), there is no doubt only a great mind could have made such a work and I really enjoyed watching it.

It is obviously not a regular movie and therefore it cannot really be compared with any other movie or judged by the usual criteria. If you look that way, you will only find it confusing. I believe Pi is too individual and abstract for such an approach. One of the things that makes it special is the sound and editing. This gritty black&white cinematography creates a dark, creepy atmosphere that fits the madness and alienation. Even the light scenes are scary.

I think the movie raises great questions I often think about. The main theme I recognize in this movie is the deep drive to understand life (by reasoning and math) and the pain caused by the incapability to achieve that goal. It’s about the question whether it is worth exploring complexity, streching your mind and going to the edge of its limits, or even further and risking to lose it, to go mad and never come back. And also about the question whether a genious like Max is gifted or cursed… maybe both?

The soundtrack is truly amazing. Especially these tracks below:
Orbital – P.E.T.R.O.L.
Clint Mansel – Pi r^2
Massive Attack – Angel

Angel of Massive Attack is divine! But wait a minute… Clint Mansel? That name sounds familair… but of course! I just discovered interesting links. Lux Aeterna – one of the most haunting, depressing pieces of music – is a composition of Clint Mansel! One of my favorite soundtracks, though I never watched the movie Requiem for a Dream. My brother told me explicitly not to. No idea why, but I trust my brother. However since I just discovered who is the director of it… (Darren Aronofsky, the director of Pi :D) and Sean Gullette acts in it (he’s playing the main character in Pi), I am getting very curious. I saw a lot of very positive comments about it. Weird.

Anyhow, there’s another link: I did not know Clint Mansel made the wonderfull soundtrack for the movie Moon. And also the theme for The Imitation game, which I coincidentally watched one day before Pi. Amazing movie with such a moving story… though I don’t remember the soundtrack. I’ll check it out later. For now I am going to update my list of favorite soundtracks! What a coincidence to discover it like this… or is this no coincidence and there is a pattern? ;) :P

Another plus: thank to Pi I have a new hobby: Go! I’m studying it now and I really enjoy solving problems and playing it. I will probably post about it in the future in the gaming section. :)
